Farm Description-Photos taken June 10th 2010
A'Ama Organic Farm is on a quiet paved country road and only three blocks from the fire station, police station, post office, supermarket and hardware store. It is 2.8 acres, fee simple, has county water, is certified organic by the USDA and the Hawaii Organic Farmers Assn [HOFA] and was planted ages ago with coffee trees that are now beautiful gnarly old things that yield fabulous mellow Kona coffee. It was originally a part of the Kealakekua Ranch who were the very first growers to export coffee from Hawaii 145 years ago.
Unlike many rocky Kona farms the land has good soil. It gently slopes upward from the entrance to the top border of the property. A’ama is an 'estate' farm which means that we process and sell our own coffee under our registered label either as graded certified green coffee or as roasted coffee. A’ama Organic Farm won the gold medal at the first Cream of the Crop, People's Choice competition where the public voted to select the best tasting coffee, and we are the first official coffee of the Ironman Triathalon organization.
http://www.mdotcoffee.com A’ama is the Hawaiian named for a delicious little crab that lives in the splash zone on shoreside rocks, a highly prized treat at a luau.
There are avocados [fabulous, but not commercial] and serious bananas which command a great price in the local health food stores.
The 3 BR/1BA main house is rented and a separate small cottage is also rented to a couple who do the farm work. A'ama Organic Farm is a going concern. There is a processing shed, a separate small building for climate controlled storage after harvest and a free standing restroom for onsite visitors/tourist farm visits.
